I used to be cynical…
I attended the Peel Rally for Change last night in Brampton with Justin Trudeau and the Rt Hon. Paul Martin.
I’ve been to many rallies over these past many years. Too many to count. Start the music, crowd claps, leader enters, candidates smile like they won the lottery, leader speaks with bromides and platitudes, smiles, shakes hands, play music, leaves venue.
Well, this old duck has been converted.
I can only recall one other rally, with Jean Chretien, where there was palpable excitement and enthusiasm in the room. Something different was happening.
Trudeau spoke like I’ve never heard him before, with passion.
I used to think he was acting the role of a political leader. I thought he’s only the leader because his last name is Trudeau. But he’s getting comfortable in his role and finding his voice.
He has had millions of dollars of attack ads thrust against him. And yet he continues. He marches on.
Tories say he was born with a silver spoon and $1 million of his father’s money. It would then be easier for him to canoe with his family and sit in his backyard. But he is running. There’s something altruistic about that.
Yes, that sounds hokey, but I am converted to “Team Trudeau.”
Of course I was always voting Liberal, but now very proud to do so.
A long campaign could help the Liberals.
So much energy in that room last night. Trudeau has found his footing.
People can believe in him, even old cynical curmudgeons like me. Very proud to be a federal Liberal again!
