People said the Liberal Party was done for after the last election. They said the only choice left was between two extremes – the Conservatives and the NDP.
We are proving them wrong.
We stood up against the Conservatives’ kitchen-sink budget bill that guts environmental legislation, hurts seniors and does nothing to create jobs. We held the government to account for election fraud, for inaction on healthcare and the environment, for the economy and for misleading Canadians about the true cost of the F-35s.
Despite our successes in Parliament, we must not underestimate the task at hand.
We are up against the most secretive and spiteful government in Canadian history. This is a government that has no problem abusing its power, deceiving Canadians and attacking anyone who dares question them.
We are also competing with an NDP that practices division and attack as it pretends to have “changed”. Its constitutional commitment to “socialism” stays the same and it still hasn’t embraced innovation and a dynamic market place.
And yes, we are, at least in part, up against ourselves. If we are to regain the faith of the Canadian people, we must prove to them that we really believe in ourselves – in one united Liberal Party.
At our January Biennial convention, Liberals voted to radically change our party, opening it to all Canadians through the Supporter category. Now every Canadian can have the opportunity to choose our next leader and help us change, modernize and grow.
These are exciting times, as we begin the next phase of our rebuilding. I encourage you to share your ideas constructively, get more involved in your riding association, donate to the party and sign up your friends as supporters.
Together, we can make the Liberal Party a powerful force ready to take on Stephen Harper and Thomas Mulcair and win in 2015.
