“From severely understating the cost of Canada’s military action in Libya, to misleading Canadians about purchasing new armoured vehicles and the cost of the F-35s, this government has tried to pull the wool over Canadians eyes to cover up their fiscal incompetence,” said Mr. MacKay. “Now, the Harper Conservatives are increasing secrecy and reducing oversight by making information that was once public secret and chopping audit and control functions across the government.”
New revelations have surfaced that the actual cost of Canada’s mission in Libya was 700% higher than originally stated by the Minister of Defence and that the government awarded a $105-million contract for 13 Leopard armoured vehicles, but instead claimed it was for “new transmission parts.” At a time when serious auditing is required to get to the truth about how the Harper Conservative are spending military procurement dollars, the government is reducing transparency by making more documents secret, cutting audit requirements and chopping the Auditor General’s budget.
“At a time when this government is mired in lies and deceit, their answer is to have two separate sets of books, rather than let the sun shine in,” said Mr. McKay. “Instead of hiding their deception and incompetence, it is time that the Harper Conservatives take responsibility and clean up the mess they have created.”
